so habe das gute stück jetzt durch, und bin im großen und ganzen auch sehr begeistert.
möchte euch hier ein paar "schmankerl" aus dem buch präsentieren:
die enstehung des 2-tone labels und des 2tone "maskotchens":
Our look was now defined, and our record was happening too.
....
what we didn´t have was a label to release it on. it became apparent that the label had to complement the band´s musix, its image, and it had to be cool. after rehearsals, jerry and i would sit around and come up with ideas, names, sketches: satik and underworld were two that i remember, bit 2-tone was the name that stood out. i got the "2" with the "tone" bit underneath together, but it was jerry who used the idea of lack and white check (an old mod op-art motif - one of the simplest decorative patterns in the world), and the 2-tone man. this was a caricature of peter tosh taken from an early photo of the wailers. it was a brilliant image. simple, which said everything about us in a threeinch circle of paper. the 2-tone man was, somewhere along the line, given the name Walt jacobso. this was the name on a bowling shirt that jerry had picked up somewhere.
chart statistiken 1980:
i. our album is number two in Austria, having sold 592 copies.
ii. our album has gone straight into the canadian charts at number eleven, selling 9.000 copies
iii. "gangsters" has sold 140.000 copies in France
Wusste garnicht dass die hier in österreich so weit oben in den charts waren. aber 592 exemplare, eigentlich IMMERHIN!
Specials in Minneapolis und spielen in einem club der Duffy´s heisst:
Duffy´s is a small club and feautures male strippers early on monday nights. Neville, never one to miss an opportunity to show off, does an impromptu strip and drives the place wild. What a geezer! The soundcheck.....
New york:
Apparently, Bruce Foxton (Jam bass player), David Bowie and Mick Jagger were at our gig tonight. I´m afraid I couldn´t care less.
Pink Pop festival 1980
The Van Halen crew put their word out that they wouldn´t stand for any skinheads invading THEIR stage. they must have been worried. the van halens were hilarious. dave lee roth arrived with a big plaster across the nose; he´d broken it a couple of nights previous junping too high and nutting a mirror ball. Twit.
Die Stimmung fällt:
It was clear to anyone with a brain that things were not happy in Special-land. Melody Maker´s Paolo Hewitt witnessed Roddy hurling empty beer glasses and threats in anyones´s direction. I suppose if anyone was not coping, it was Rod. It wa splain to see he had difficulty handling being a Special and he´d try to blot out the problems with alcohol, which temporarily turned hin from a likeable lad to an unpedictable and angry young man.
Erklärungsversuche für den Zerfall:
I´m trying my best to think of any one thing that caused the specials to fall apart. it´s difficult. it was lots of small things. for me, it was brad´s blustery, aggressive manner and wind-ups; Roddy drinking; Jerry drinking; Terry´s self-defensive cynisism; Rick Rogers trying to placate everybody at the same time and failing; me singing Frank Zappa tunes in the back of a bus (Anm: wird vorher im Buch erklärt. er singt mit irgendeinem anderen bassisten, dessen name mir entfallen ist, und geht den anderen damit nach einiger zeit stark auf die nerven); cocaine, and the money.
Artikel aus der Daily Mirror
Pop group face boot from Japan after fans run riot
Top pop group the specials face the froom japan today following a concert riot. they were being detained at their osaka hotel last night after a wild stampede by fans at their show in the city. police threw the groups japanese promoter to jail.
Seine Meinung zu den aufnahmen der Specials bei Dance Craze:
A feature film was being made around live footage of all the 2-toe bands currently touring, and the leiceister and liverpool shows were filmed for what would be released as Dance craze. "conrete jungle" and "man from c&a" from the liverpool shows are fantastically exciting, but played on nervous (and probably chemical) energy. there is no groove there at all. more motörhead than marley.
.......
Dance craze is currently owned by stiff records, and i´m sure i´ve seen a copy of it on dvd somewhere. (my copy is a bootleg video)
entstehung der Fun boy three:
The specials had ultimately become a job. turn up, tune up, play and go away. jerry seemed more and more desponent, brad blustered away, roddy snarled and lyn, terry and nev sat together sat together looking miserable, which is why dave jordan named them the Fun Boy Three

so long
